Hurigalu as a Snack
Hurigalu literally translates to Roasted Gram or Roasted Beans in general in Kannada. People of Karnataka are really fond of their snacks, and Hurigalu is one of them. Known as Hurigalu, Hurgaalu, Hurigal, or Hurigaalu, the snack is made from roasted beans and lentils like, Split Chickpeas, Green Peas, Black Eyed Beans, Whole Bengal Gram Dal, Green Gram and Groundnuts. The recipe sometimes also contains dried roasted coconut chips or pieces along with green gram (moong) & cowpea (moth).
There are two ways Bangalore's Hurigalu is prepared, either by roasting it after soaking it in the water overnight or frying it and seasoning it with authentic Indian spices like red chilli powder, asafetida & turmeric. Hurigali is made during every little happiness and celebration locally. It is one of the snacks that one can eat without getting conscious about their health. Hurigalu contains so many tasty beans and lentils, which helps in the healthy way of life. It is essentially like a trail mix, a mixture of roasted beans of different varieties tossed in the right amount of red chilli, salt, turmeric, and other spices. The lemon juice sprayed and mixed with hurgalu to give it that sour element and make it extra savoury.
This low-calorie snack is rich in vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers. Helps in proper digestion, Hurigalu is eaten with chai as a tea-time namkeen, coffee (kaapi), and after meal munchies. The spicy crunchy snack is so addictive that it gets tough to stop eating if started. The roasted or fried snacks is stored in airtight boxes and also consumed as a sabzi after soaking & cooking it in the gravy. Hurigalu is an inseparable essential part of Karnataka’s tradition & festival, loved by everyone who puts their taste on it.
