Imam Pasand Mangoes

Hamam, Hamam Pasand, Himayat or Imam Pasand is an exclusive and not so popular mango type, grown in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Tamil Nadu in India. The name suggests royal origins and it is said to be the choice of India’s Royalty. It is a large and unattractive mango type. It is mottled green when raw which lightens up to blotched yellowish green when it ripens. Available during the month of May & June only, each mango can grow up to 800 g in weight. Imam Pasand Mangoes have notably soft skin, easy to bite through or can even be eaten. The soft skin makes it tough to transport.

It is loved by the connoisseurs for its unique taste and is famously known as the “King of Mangoes”. Many mangoes are initially sweet but can turn into harsh, chalky, or chemical like when eaten, due to the turpentine that some varieties naturally contain. Alphonso, one of the most famous mangoes in the mango universe suffers from the turpentine aftertaste. However, Imam Pasand’s aftertaste has a beautiful aroma & incredibly rich smoothness. The core taste of the Imam Pasand mango is quite different from all the other mangoes. It is fibreless, buttery, has a tangy outer layer with sweet flesh and juicy inside.

The fruit is still a local flavour and there are no plans of exporting them in the near future as the domestic demands keep the cultivators busy enough for the only two months it is grown and also because only 1% of the flowering trees bear fruits. Despite its fame amongst the mango connoisseurs, it is one of the best kept secrets in the mango world. The origin of this rare variety’s Hindi name is lost in the gust of time. People claim that it was originally grown in Kerala and was loved by the Mughal Emperor Humayun, where it got its local name “Humayun Pasand”. But whatever be the origin of this mango, people do not really care about it and is loved by locals and connoisseurs alike.
