Banganapalli Mangoes

Cultivated in the southern part of India in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Banganapalli, Banganapalle, Baiganpalli, Benishan, chappatai, Badam Aam or Safeda is one of the earliest varieties of mangoes to hit the markets during summers. This mango variety originated from the Banaganapalle Village of Kurnool in the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh. It alone occupies 70% of the mango cultivable area of the state and was first introduced by the farmers of the village. Being registered as the geographical indication from Andhra Pradesh in 2017, it is grown & known by different names in different places across India. Not just India, Banganapalli is famous in Pakistan as well.

The mango is Oval in shape, averaged at 14 cm in length, with bright yellow flesh and smooth yellow skin with occasional green patches. The skin is one of the thinnest in the mango universe and the flesh to pit ratio is one of the highest. The flesh is of a firm, meaty & creamy texture and is tangy, sweet and lacks fibre. It is one of the most sought-after variety of mango and is a mid-season variety that is good for canning. Baiganpalli is a good source of Vitamin A & C and is known as King of Mangoes.

Boasting a shelf-life of 7 days without refrigeration when ripe, it is a favourite when it comes to exports. Not just in India, but Banganafalli is also found on the dinner tables of foreigners alike. The fruit can grow up to the size as large as 25 cms and can weigh upto a kilo. This mango comes with a lot of health benefits too. It is a natural source of magnesium & potassium and can also regulate the digestion process with the help of enzymes in the fruit. It is also high in antioxidants which helps in reducing the risk of cancer and other ailments in the body. Banganapalli also contains vitamins such as B6, A, C, E, B5 and K. Safeda is the best mango hands down, which is usually shadowed by its high availability and other rare mango types.
