Avarebele Beans

Hyacinth Beans are popularly known as Avarebele by the locals in Karnataka. These beans are very versatile and loved throughout the state. The uniqueness and flavour of the beans are so popular that there is a festival/ fair dedicated to it called ‘Avarekai Mela’. The finest quality seeds are fried, roasted, boiled, cooked, or mixed with other ingredients to make a ton of different dishes presented in the fair. From street foods to delicacies it is used everywhere. Chaat, Dosa, Salads, Chikki, Barfi, laddu and so many more ways to present it. A total of more than 150 Avarebele dishes are prepared in the mela every year. Bengaluru is also known for its festivals celebrating other agricultural products. Like Avarekai mela, Bangalore also hosts annual peanut fair called ‘Kadalekai Parishe’ and also the Millets fair.

Native to Africa, Hyacinth is cultivated widely in North Africa and Asia. Making its way to India from Africa in between 1600 to 1500 BC, it quickly became a popular food source. The cooked Avarebele Beans without the salt provides 227 Calories per 1 cup of 194 grams. It contains high amount of Iron, Copper & Zinc. The same amount of serving size provides 159mg of magnesium, 233mg of phosphorus, 15.79 g of protein and 78 mg of calcium. Avarebele contains good number of calories and is eaten for instant energy due to its healthy properties.
