Watermelon & its Super Seeds
A flowering plant species of Cucurbitaceae family, Watermelon is a highly cultivated fruit worldwide with more than 1000 varieties. The large edible fruit is grown in favorable climates from tropical to temperate regions worldwide. Watermelon is a sweet, most commonly consumed fruit of summer, usually as fresh slices, mixed in fruit salads or as a juice. The juice of the watermelon is blended with other fruit juice and made into wine. Watermelon rinds or the white fleshy part under the peel, may be eaten, but their unappealing flavour may be overcome by pickling, or can be sometimes cooked as a vegetable. The seeds have a nutty flavour and can be dried and roasted or ground into flour. China is the largest cultivator of watermelons with more than 60 million tonnes, where the seeds are eaten at Chinese New Year Celebrations. In Vietnamese culture, they are consumed as a snack during their new year. Wild watermelon seeds have been found in the prehistoric Libyan sites, and in Pharoah tombs of watermelon cultivation in ancient Egypt. People have known to consume watermelon seeds as a snack for 5000 years ago.
