The Tosha is a type of shakkarpara made by the Sindhi community. These are made at distributed at community festivals, events and also packed to enjoy as a pick-me-up on for journeys.
Essentially, the Tosha are fried pieces of dough studded with the aromatic fennel seed (saunf) and lightly coated with crystallized sugar. The different texture of the dough, the hint of fennel and the consistency of the sugar coating all together give the Tosha a flaky texture and a delicious taste.
And if you are wondering about the origin of the name Tosha, here are some fun facts that point to how this sweet got its name. The word Tosha means 'happiness' or 'contentment' in Punjabi. And in Persian, the word means 'provisions'. The extended Persian phrase 'Toshasi rah' means 'provisions for the journey'.
While there is no certainty of how the Tosha got its name, we can affirm that the Tosha is indeed a very satisfying provision for any journey you enjoy it on!
